Maycillin Magic: Robert Hunter's Herd Triumph at West Tarbrax Farm

At West Tarbrax Farm, Robert Hunter manages about 200 cows, including 160-170 Jerseys, all year round. For nearly three years, Maycillin boluses have been a key element of his strategy to combat mastitis—a common challenge for dairy farmers. Robert notes, “the fact I'm still using it speaks volumes; it obviously does work.”
Initially, Robert experimented with boluses from another provider but found himself unconvinced of their efficacy. Driven by the desire to reduce reliance on antibiotics, he turned to Maycillin. The difference was palpable. “The transition to Maycillin was night and day compared to what we'd been using before."
One testament to the boluses' effectiveness occurred on the morning of a major agricultural show. Robert noticed a cow with a swollen quarter right before departure. Acting quickly, he administered two Maycillin boluses. By lunchtime, the swelling had subsided, and the cow went on to win accolades, including Reserve Super Cow. This experience showcased the boluses' rapid action and reliability.
For Robert, Maycillin boluses have become an indispensable tool. “If you see yourself getting near the end of the box, you make sure you’ve got another lined up". The boluses are particularly useful for fresh-calved Jersey heifers, helping reduce udder swelling and potential mastitis.
The benefits of Maycillin extend beyond emergency situations. Robert has consistently used them on cows with high cell counts, observing dramatic improvements. After treating several cows, their cell counts dropped significantly without any signs of mastitis. This success has reinforced Robert's confidence in boluses as a preventative and restorative measure.
Robert also highlights a couple of cases involving severe mastitis. While the recovery process took some time, the cows eventually calved with healthy udders, proving the boluses’ long-term efficacy.
Three years into using Maycillin boluses, Robert remains an advocate, recommending them to fellow farmers.
“I wouldn’t be recommending it to anyone if it didn’t work as well as it does.”
