Enhancing Nutrition with Mayo Boluses at High Country Romneys

Led by Sam Sawday, High Country Romneys specialises in Romney and RomTex stud breeding, successfully running around 1,500 ewes on an all-grass, all-forage system.
At High Country Romneys, the integration of New Zealand genetics is at the heart of their breeding program. By importing rams from New Zealand, Sam leverages the New Zealand Maternal Index System (SIL) to record and link their stud animals, ensuring top-tier breeding stock. “We aim for all-round performers with high lamb survival rates and strong worm resistance”, emphasising a focus that has been crucial for the farm’s success.
With their rigorous approach, High Country Romneys scans around 180-185% in lambing, with high lamb survival rates. Every stud animal is recorded at birth, with lamb vigour, parenting ability, and birth weights meticulously documented. This hands-on approach provides invaluable insights into the performance of their flock.
Operating a 100% forage-fed system brings its own set of challenges, especially concerning trace elements. To counter these deficiencies, specifically in selenium, cobalt and iodine, the farm has used Mayo 4in1 and 5in1 boluses for around 5 years. The boluses provide a slow release of essential trace elements, giving peace of mind that their sheep’s nutritional needs are being met.
Mayo boluses have become an integral part of the farm's management strategy. Used twice a year for ewes and rams, and extended to young stock in the autumn, these boluses ensure that the flock remains healthy and productive.
