Dylan Roberts' Cattle Success at Fron Farm

Dylan Roberts' Cattle Success at Fron Farm

Based in Hendre near Mold, North Wales, Fron Farm stands as a testament to innovation in livestock management. Dylan Roberts' farm has embarked on a  journey to enhance cattle health and growth, focusing on their distinctive Aberdeen Angus and Wagyu crossbreed calves.

Fron Farm currently runs 130 suckler cows of Aberdeen Angus' crossed with Wagyu bulls, resulting in calves that are 50% Wagyu. To maximize the potential of these crossbreeds, Dylan Roberts has made a significant transition from traditional mineral supplementation methods to more efficient boluses.

Previously, mineral intake was managed through 30-kilo bags, but ensuring that each cow received the necessary nutrients was a constant challenge.

"We could never ensure ourselves that they were all taking it, with a bolus we all know that they're taking the required amount.".

By administering boluses every spring and before housing each year, the farm has observed noticeable improvements in growth rates. This method not only boosts the calves' development but also allows for earlier weaning, potentially a month or two ahead of schedule.

Dylan highlights the essential timing of administering boluses two months prior to calving, which significantly enhances milk quality and supports fertility. Moreover, in an area known for copper deficiency, the confidence that every cow receives adequate copper and iodine is invaluable. These elements are crucial for maintaining optimal health and productivity in cattle.

The success of boluses at Fron Farm extends beyond cattle. Dylan also utilizes Mayo products for store lambs, having administered boluses to 2,000 lambs last year. The results have been evident in improved daily weight gain, showcasing the versatility and effectiveness of this approach across different livestock.
